What My Decision-Making (Red) Score shows

  • I chose the decision-making options 100% of the time. My strongest preference is to get to red and get a decision. I like pushing for action and getting things done. I like to be straightforward and task oriented. I ask tough questions. I like to get to the bottom line. I bring a sense of urgency to get things done - now.

  • I need to be aware of how my strong Red thinking approach may feel pushy and frustrate people who don't think like I do. They likely need more time or options before they're ready to decide.

  • I am happiest if I have work that gives me the opportunity to make things happen and get things done.

What is Red Decision-Making?

The Red decision-making mindset is used to act. Use it to focus into stopping everything else and make the best decision. In the red zone, I aim on deciding what's the right thing to do. I stop gathering more facts or developing more options. My red light decision-making style shows how much I prefer to get down to cut to the chase, ask tough questions, decide or get a decision.

There are two different sets of strategies to make effective decisions. The first way is to stay cool, be objective and use my critical thinking skills:

  • get the crux or heart of a problem before I do anything else
  • come to a solid conclusion about what to do based on yellow information and green options
  • validate that my conclusion is the best one with logic and evidence to make sure it makes sense
  • use my experience to help me decide

The second way is to use your emotions and feelings to decide:

  • make sure the decision fits my values and beliefs
  • trust your gut intuition to help me decide

When Do I Need Red Decision-Making?

I need to shift into my red light decision-making mindset when I need to stop and decide what’s most important and what makes the most sense to do next.

Red light decision-making is most helpful when there’s pressure to act. Thinking in Red light focuses my attention. It gives me the knowledge, the data and information I need to understand and negotiate my world and my relationships.

Sometimes when things are complicated, I need to use both my head and my heart:

  • I need to stay cool and objective and not get caught up in the strong emotions
  • I need to be warm and emotional and use my gut or my values to help me decide

The more complex things are the more likely I’ll need to use both my head and my heart to make the best decision.



What My Understanding (Yellow) Score shows

  • I chose the Yellow understanding options 50% of the time. This is my back up thinking style. I am comfortable going to my analytical mindset to understand what's going on around me when I have to.

What is Yellow Understanding

The yellow mindset is what I need to use to slow down and understand things better before I act. Switch into this mindset to take time, gather the facts and think things through. The higher my Understanding Style is, the more I like to use well organized and planned approaches to do work and get things done. Shift into the yellow thinking mindset to get more information and deeper understanding, before deciding what to do next.

There are two sets of strategies and skills in developing understanding. The first set is to help me stay cool and use my analytical thinking:

  • gather as much information as possible
  • be organized and systematic in what I do
  • clarify a lot to make sure I understand all the details

The second set is being warm and use my compassion:

  • tune-in to how others are feeling
  • be empathetic to other people’s feelings
  • express my own feelings

When Do I Need Yellow Understanding?

I need to shift into my understanding mindset when I need to slow down and build a foundation of facts to really get a solid grasp of what’s going on.

Taking time to pursue yellow understanding will give me the data and information I need to understand and negotiate my world and build better relationships.

Sometimes I need to use my head and simply gather and organize the facts. Sometimes I need to use my heart to connect with how others are feeling.

When I am in the yellow mindset, I'm more tolerant and not in a hurry. It’s great to shift into the yellow mindset when there’s a conflict. It can help me find a common ground of information and build mutual understanding.



What My Creativity (Green) Score shows

  • I never once chose the creative thinking options. I may prefer a lot of certainty and stability. I don’t like having to come up with creative ideas and different options. I can learn to be more creative, by putting effort into skill practice

  • I should be careful not to block or ignore the creative ideas others might have.

What is Green Creativity?

The creative mindset is ideal to shift into when I need to focus my attention on generating many new ideas to help me plan, solve problems and make better decisions. Creative thinking is a vital skill for success now because there’s so much change.

The key strategies and skills in creative thinking include:

  • brainstorm many ideas
  • challenge current assumptions on how things are done
  • reframe problems into opportunities
  • envision different possibilities for the future
  • wait for spontaneous flashes of insight

When Do I Need Green Creativity?

I need to shift into my green creative thinking skills mindset when I'm planning something new or solving a problem and need some different ideas. Creative thinking is very helpful to go to when I have a new opportunity or I feel blocked and need a variety of options to choose from to make a better decision.
